Contact information for report of dead birds:

Occasionally, some other types of birds may be mistaken as crows, please see
http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/wnvsurveillance.htm

The Dept. authorized testing of crows and blue jays (at the IL. Dept. of Agriculture lab in Galesburg) beginning May 1. Only dead crows and blue jays in good condition (not decomposed) will be tested because those two species are most likely to have died from West Nile virus. Testing of other species of dead birds has not been found to be productive for West Nile virus surveillance because they are much more likely to have died from other causes.

Because the Illinois Department of Public Health generally works through local health departments whenever possible, the Department has requested that local health departments submit a limited number dead crows and jays for testing. Consequently, you should contact the County Health Department (or the Chicago Dept. of Health in Chicago) if you observe a dead crow or jay and ask if that agency is accepting those birds for testing.

The contact person for the Cook County Department of Public Health in the West Nile Virus bird collection and related activities for environmental health is Latrice Porter-Smith. Latrice can be reached at (708) 492-2035.

Chicago contact - Dead birds are being handled by Rodent Control. Our contact at Rodent control is Jose Cruz att 312-745-0900.

A list of local health departments may be found at:
http://www.idph.state.il.us/local/map.htm

Questions about wildlife may be directed to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources,

Division of Wildlife Resources (217/782-6384) or Mr. Joe Kath jkath@dnrmail.state.il.us
